This blog is an exercise used for EDM 510. Most high schools have four counselors. My question is how should they be used? Should a high school counselor stay with the same class for all four years?
When I was in high school we had a councelor assigned to our grade level. She met with me individually, and we discussed what would be a good path for me to take according to my interests. It is because of her that I am an art teacher today. So, I think if a councelor wants to work with only 9th graders and get them going on the right track that would be great. If the councelor and/or school would like them to stay with that group through all 4 years, I think that would be great too.
YES YES YES!! In my personal opinion, if a counselor were to stay with a group of students throughout four years, it does them much better. They have more time to come to trust that person, and to be able to open up to them about matters that they may not be willing to discuss with someone that they are just getting to know...
I think staying with the same group would be a great idea. That way you can get to know each student. I think counselors are for guidance, to help when needed, and to teach students character. They should be responsible for teaching as well as guidance.
I feel it would be beneficial to students if they had a counselor that can follow them from 9th grade to 12th grade for example. In my high school, our school was set up this way. Our counselor stuck with us all the way through 12th grade and it help use a lot. She got to know us and was better able to guide us with picking classes and preparing us for college, technical schools, and the work force.
I think that the counselors should move with their students. The counselor with the graduating class will go back down to the freshman. If they do this then they will have all of the information of the students and will be able to help them better in choosing a career and a brighter future. The students would also feel more comfortable with them and in a time of need would most likely go talk to them.
